The church started with a few members with Mr. Dwight M. Suluku as its first Evangelist in 1990. With nowhere to hold Sunday Services, members agreed that services be held at individual’s homes in turn. Side by side with Sunday Services were visitations to members' homes to teach the history and doctrines of the Lutheran Church, literature of which was supplied by Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sierra Leone
By the intervention of the almighty, the then head teacher of M.D.C. School, Taima-Mr. Joseph B. Kosseh offered the church one classroom on request for Sunday services, a place which the congregation is still using. A membership of 20 – 30 started using this facility in 1991.
During this period 1991 – 1993 frantic effort were made to increase the membership of the church; this led to the establishment of five extension areas. These were Foinda, Gboworbu, Mambayeima, Mbawomahun and Kortiya villages. At the same time, it was the period of the Ishaya’s Missionaries to Sierra Leone (ELCSL) from Nigeria.
In September 1993, the late Ms. Juliet Rogers Wright took over the church as an Evangelist when Mr. Dwight M. Suluku went for further studies.
After completion of his studies in 1995, Mr. D.M. Suluku returned to continue his work as Evangelist and Ms. Juliet Rogers Wright was transferred to Freetown and by 1999, Reverend Edward H. Lavally was sent to be in charge of this congregation and some others within the district.
The first baptism was effected by Rev. E.H. Lavally where thirty four (34) members were baptized. Another baptism was done again by Rev. E.H. Lavally in 2000 where sixty two (62) more members were baptized including members of the Mbawomahun extension station. The third baptism was done by Rev. Lynton Gormoh.
The Women’s Wing of this congregation is engaged in gardening and petty trading. The products of the gardening are sold and funds are saved for this Wing’s use when needed.
Messiah Lutheran Church has a membership of 189, including a preaching point at Mbawomahun out of which there are 145 baptized members.
